Find Your WHY: The Life-Changing Exercise You Need to Try!

This weekend, I had the pleasure of exploring the breathtaking coastline of the northeast of England. It was an absolute treat to spend quality time with my wife Abby, soaking up the beauty of the beaches and charming little towns that are dotted around this part of the world. Moments like these remind me why I work so hard and how crucial it is to align my daily efforts with my goals.
One of my major goals is exactly this, creating meaningful experiences with my loved ones. But it's more than just a goal on a list; it's deeply rooted in what truly drives me. Recently, I've been reflecting on the importance of understanding our deeper motivations, our "why." Knowing your why is like having a compass that keeps you on course, especially when life gets busy or challenging.
A while back, I came across a tool that really helped me get to the core of my "why," and I'd like to share it with you. It's a simple exercise, but it can be incredibly powerful in helping you understand what truly motivates you.
Start by writing down the amount of money you want to earn each month to feel successful in your goals. Now, this shouldn't be some out-of-reach, pie-in-the-sky number. Instead, it should be a figure you believe is achievable and will bring you happiness and fulfilment.
Once you've written down that number, write the word "why" beneath it. Why do you want to achieve that number? What's driving you? Write down that reason. Then, under that reason, write another "why." Keep going, ask yourself why again and again, digging deeper with each answer.
It gets challenging after about the third or fourth "why." You might feel like you're running in circles, but that's the point where you need to push through. Keep digging until you reach the true, underlying reason that motivates you. When you finally get there, you'll find clarity and a renewed focus that will help you stay committed to your goals.
So, give this little exercise a try. It's a fantastic way to reconnect with what truly matters to you. As for me, I'm off to enjoy the rest of this beautiful weekend at our cozy B&B, and tomorrow, we'll continue living with purpose in accordance with our WHY.
To your success,
Grant
